We meet our traveller at the airport or bus station and take them to our Amazon Garden Lodge Tours offices for check-in.
We then head to the dock where we board a boat that will take us to the hotel (a 40 minute ride). As part of the welcome, you will be offered a refreshing juice made from local fruits, while our guide will brief you on the hotel’s policies. Afterwards, we settle into our designated rooms.
After enjoying a delicious lunch and taking a short nap, we take a two-hour hike in the lush tropical forest. An expert local guide accompanies us and leads us along trails where we can observe a wide variety of medicinal plants and trees that can be more than six hundred years old.
On our trails, there is always the possibility of spotting wildlife such as monkeys, parrots, macaws, squirrels, reptiles, insects, frogs, arachnids, among others. You will experience the pure energy of the jungle while living magical moments inside the Tambopata National Reserve.
In the evening, we embark again to look for nocturnal animals that are usually found on the banks of the Madre de Dios River. We will have the opportunity to spot caimans of different sizes, owls, nightjars and, if we are lucky, even the capybara, the largest rodent in the world. We return to the hotel in time for dinner.
One of the best opportunities to observe abundant wildlife is during sunrise or sunset. In our case, we chose to take a sunrise excursion on our boat to Sandoval Lake, located within the Tambopata National Reserve. Witnessing the incredible biodiversity of Lake Sandoval is simply incomparable.
To get there, we walk along a wooden trail that spans almost 3 km (1.8 miles). During this hike, we are always amazed by the rich fauna that inhabits this place. At the end of the trail, we reach a small dock where we board a rowing boat to explore the Sandoval Lake. During this tour, we have the chance to see black caimans, giant otters, herons, turtles, monkeys, macaws, wild ducks and much more. We return to the lodge before noon to enjoy our lunch.
In the afternoon, we visit a native family belonging to the “Matsigenka” culture. There we interact with them and learn about their culture.
They teach us how to use bows and arrows, spin and weave cotton to make their clothing called “Cushma”. They also teach us how to make ropes using the bark of plants and show us their ability to light fires using only natural resources. We return to the hotel to rest and relax.

When night falls, the jungle offers us a majestic nightlife that is very different from the daytime. For this excursion, we equip ourselves with torches and go into the trails in search of nocturnal wildlife including porcupines, tree sloths, insects, reptiles, opossums, night monkeys, owls, among others. We return to the hotel to enjoy dinner and then rest.
This exciting adventure begins at dawn, when we board our boat and sail upstream on the Madre de Dios River for approximately 50 minutes until we reach the parrot and macaw clay lick called “La Cachuela”. During the trip, we have the option to enjoy the beautiful sunrise that nature gives us.
Once at the clay lick, we can observe different species of medium-sized macaws, parrots, parakeets and sometimes even sloths on the river cliffs.
On a good day, it is possible to see up to 7 species of these birds. Every morning, these birds come to the clay lick to consume clay containing mineral salts. According to research, this clay also helps to improve the birds’ digestion and metabolism. After having had an unforgettable experience, we return to the hotel to enjoy our breakfast.
After a hearty breakfast, we head out to visit a local farm where we will learn about plant grafting and see different types of soils. We will also have the opportunity to taste and observe typical rainforest crops such as coffee, different varieties of cocoa, citrus, ingas, bananas, among others. We return to the hotel around noon.
After enjoying a leisurely Amazonian lunch and some rest, we embark on a hike along a trail where we will learn about the giant trees. We will arrive at a tree that is over 700 years old, and right there begin the suspension bridges that span between the trees.
During the walk across the bridges, we will have the opportunity to observe the rich fauna that inhabits this part of the forest, known as “canopy”. As we walk along the bridges, it is possible to spot toucans, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, monkeys, lizards, orchids, epiphytes and many other wonders.
After having experienced a magical night and absorbed the pure and clean energy of the jungle, we are ready to continue enjoying our well-deserved holiday. This time, we embark on a kayaking adventure after breakfast.
This tour consists of paddling close to the banks of the Madre de Dios River with the purpose of searching for wildlife, such as endangered turtles, white caimans, kingfishers, herons and, with luck, even an anaconda. For this exciting adventure, we must wear life jackets which will be provided by our guide. We return to the hotel around noon.
In the afternoon, we leave the hotel for the city and then take a vehicle to the stunning Yacumama Lake, which boasts lush scenic beauty and offers the most breathtaking sunsets in the region. This lake also serves as a dormitory for hundreds of macaws, parrots and parakeets.
On many occasions, we may spot black caimans, herons, cormorants, wild ducks, swallows, four varieties of piranhas and even, with a lot of luck, a family of river otters. During this tour of Lake Yacumama, we will use a medium-sized rowing boat to take us to the spot where we usually fish for piranhas. Piranha fishing is very easy to do with small hooks.
Once we catch a piranha, we take a picture with it and then return it to its aquatic environment so as not to diminish the food source of the fishing animals. In the evening, we return to our hotel.
