Overview

Tambopata Tour 2 Days

The Chuncho Macaws Clay Lick in Tambopata Tour 2 Days is a renowned natural phenomenon and a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers. Located within the Tambopata National Reserve in the Amazon rainforest, it is considered one of the largest and most accessible clay licks in the world.

A clay lick, also known as a “colpa,” is a site where various animal species, especially parrots and macaws, gather to feed on mineral-rich clay. The exact reason behind this behavior is not fully understood, but it is believed that the clay helps neutralize toxins found in their diet of unripe fruits and seeds. The Chuncho Macaws Clay Lick attracts hundreds of macaws, parrots, and other bird species, creating a spectacular and colorful display.

To witness the macaws and parrots congregating at the clay lick, visitors usually embark on guided tours or stay at nearby eco-lodges. These lodges offer comfortable accommodations and organize excursions to the clay lick, providing opportunities for close-up observations and photography. The best time to visit is usually in the early morning when the birds are most active.

Apart from the macaws and parrots, the clay lick is also frequented by other wildlife such as tapirs, deer, and monkeys. The surrounding rainforest is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, making it a haven for nature lovers. Visitors can explore the lush jungle through guided hikes, riverboat tours, and night safaris, allowing them to encounter various species of plants, animals, and insects.

It’s important to note that the Chuncho Macaws Clay Lick is located within a protected area, and tourism activities are regulated to minimize disturbance to the wildlife. Visitors are encouraged to follow responsible tourism practices, such as keeping a respectful distance, avoiding sudden movements or loud noises, and adhering to the guidance of knowledgeable guides.

Overall, the Chuncho Macaws Clay Lick in Tambopata offers a unique opportunity to witness the captivating behavior of macaws and parrots, along with the incredible biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest. It is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and bird lovers seeking an immersive and unforgettable wildlife experience.

Itinerary

Day 1:

Puerto Maldonado - Filadelfia - Night Walk - Upper Tambopata chuncho Macaws Clay Lick

On the first day, our activities will begin at 10:00 in the morning. You have the option to meet us at our Amazon Garden Lodge office in Puerto Maldonado or we can arrange to pick you up from your Hotel/Bus Terminal or Airport. We will then embark on a two-hour journey.

The first hour will be spent on the interoceanic highway, followed by a less congested road that will lead us to the banks of the Tambopata river. Upon arrival, our boat and motorist will be ready to transport us upstream along the river for approximately 30 minutes until we reach our Lodge.

During the boat ride, we will have opportunities to observe various birds and wildlife such as capybaras and white caimans along the riverside. Once we arrive at the lodge, you will be welcomed with a refreshing drink, and we will provide a brief overview of the services available during your stay.

After settling into your assigned room, you will have the opportunity to explore the surroundings on foot.

Following lunch, we will take a short break before embarking on a walk through a primary forest that is home to ancient trees.

Throughout the walk, we will provide informative commentary on the significant economic activities in our region, including agriculture, mining, logging, chestnut collection (Brazil nut), and ecotourism. Additionally, we will keep an eye out for monkeys and other mammals in their natural habitats.

At sunset, we will return to the lodge and gather our flashlights for an excursion to observe alligators, capybaras, and potentially spot felines that venture near the river in search of prey.

After enjoying our dinner, for those who still have energy, we can partake in a short nighttime walk. This activity aims to discover insects, arachnids, tarantulas, and possibly encounter snakes, armadillos, night monkeys, or tapirs in close proximity to the lodge.

Day 2:

Lodge - Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick - Puerto Maldonado

On the second day, we will wake up bright and early and embark on an upstream journey at 4:30 am, accompanied by the serene beauty of the sunrise and the calming aroma of a delicious cup of coffee.

The landscape that unfolds before us is truly awe-inspiring, and there is a chance, albeit a 20% one, that we might catch a glimpse of a majestic jaguar or an impressive anaconda along the shores of the Tambopata National Reserve.

Upon reaching our destination, we will be treated to a captivating spectacle of parrots and macaws.

We will have the opportunity to observe these birds up close and understand why they, along with many other mammals, rely on the clay from the nearby wall as an essential part of their daily diet throughout the year.

This enthralling show will keep us engaged from approximately 6:00 am to 11:00 am. We will enjoy a delicious breakfast overlooking the Collpa Chuncho. (Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick)

After concluding our activities at this site, we will make a brief visit to the checkpoint, where we can enhance our knowledge by exploring a small museum.

Following that, we will proceed to our lodge to savor a delightful lunch. After a short break, we can visit the Mississippi ravine waterfall for a refreshing swim and also learn about various products that thrive in the fertile land of Madre de Dios.

As the afternoon begins to unfold, we will board a canoe for a 20-minute downstream journey, followed by a two-hour bus ride back to Puerto Maldonado.
