Tambopata Travel Tips: What to Do and When to Travel to Tambopata

If you are already finding out everything you need to make your trip to Tambopata the best of all. As soon as you land at the Puerto Maldonado airport , if you booked your tour with us, your guide will be waiting for you at the airport with a sign with your name. From there, we will take you in a car to our .

If you travel with Amazon Garden Lodge you will have the following:

The luggage you should carry

Luggage is restricted to 15 kg per person (33 pounds ) .

During your trip you will need to carry a handbag for your comfort, you can store your larger luggage in our office in Puerto Maldonado.

If you plan to visit other destinations in Peru or South America that require different clothing, you can pack separate suitcases and leave them safely at our offices in Puerto Maldonado.

We provide canvas bags for this purpose. Your suitcase will be waiting for you at the airport on the day of your departure.

Wifi and Internet throughout the route

It is available in the common areas of our hostels. While the connection allows you to read email and social media, it can be difficult to upload photos or make a video call. We recommend that you do not plan virtual calls during your stay at the hostels.

Please note that our lodges do not have phones and there is no cell phone service.

What languages are spoken on the Tambopata tour?

Our trips are conducted in English or Spanish, so all participants are required to have knowledge of English or Spanish and be able to communicate in that language. This is mainly due to safety factors. If you would like a guide who speaks a different language, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate that request.

How the Tour handles money

The currency in Peru is the sole, which is the only legal tender in Peru.

Foreign currency can be exchanged at any of the commercial banks, which are well represented throughout the country. Visitors can bring any amount of foreign currency into the country.

In our hostels we accept payments in soles or dollars for our services such as a bar, boutique and massages.

Make sure you have a sufficient amount of US Dollars/Euro cash in small denominations, as it is difficult to get US Dollars or Euros locally.

What is the Electricity like on the Tour?

Electrical power in our lodges comes from generators that run in the morning, around lunch, and at night. When you arrive at the hostel, our staff will inform you of the exact schedule. Hot water is available all day and there are chargers in common areas where you can always recharge your devices.

Please note that 110V appliances will not work in Peru.

Peru is always 5 hours behind Coordinated Universal Time

(UTC-05:00). Peru has a single time zone and does not observe daylight saving time.

Tips / Gratuities

Tipping is not mandatory. However, if you have received excellent service and would like to leave a token of appreciation, the following are guidelines:

  • Guide – US$10 – $12 per guest per day.
  • Hostel staff: US$5 per guest per day.

We would like to emphasize that tipping is definitely not a requirement, but should be done solely by choice and based on the service received. Anything you think is appropriate will be appreciated by the staff you meet.

Travel documents

All visitors to Peru must have a passport valid for at least 6 months after the planned date of departure from Peru.

Lost luggage

If your luggage is delayed, our support staff will do everything possible to arrange it with your airline to deliver it to you as soon as possible.

Each of our lodges has small gift shops where you can purchase essential items.

Loss of items

Please note that we cannot accept any responsibility for the loss of any items during your travels. Naturally, we will endeavor to return your lost items to you, but please note that logistics may not always be favorable for returning items.

Respect wildlife and safety when staying at lodges

Safety is of utmost importance to us and we ask that you take note of the following guidelines:

  1. Listen to the hostel staff and guides. Safety precautions must be taken seriously and strictly adhered to.
  2. Never walk alone outside the hostel without a guide.
  3. Observe the animals quietly and with minimal disturbance to their natural activities.
  4. Talking loudly can scare away animals.
  5. Never try to attract the attention of an animal. Don’t imitate animal sounds, clap, or throw objects.
  6. Respect your guide’s judgment about proximity to animals.
  7. Garbage thrown on the ground can suffocate or poison animals and birds and is also unsightly and harmful to the environment.
  8. Smoking only in designated areas.
  9. The use of drones for entertainment is not permitted.

Tips for amateur photographers

Spare batteries are essential (we recommend you bring 3 spare batteries) and some type of image storage device is recommended. Make sure you have enough storage space on the card – most people take more photos than they expect.

We recommend bringing the following for your tour in Tambopata

  1. Binoculars
  2. Camera gear, bring your long lens!
  3. Fine clothing, light color, long cotton pants.
  4. Tightly woven, light-colored cotton shirts.
  5. Hiking boots and ankle-high sneakers.
  6. Flashlight (headlight ) with batteries.
  7. sunscreen lotion
  8. Sunglasses
  9. wide brim hat
  10. Rain suit or poncho
  11. repellent insect
  12. small denomination bills
  13. Small backpack
  14. Slippers or sandals to walk around the hostel *HAVE IT IN YOUR HANDS*
  15. Small personal first aid kit with your daily medications or vitamins and basic medications such as antihistamines.

Torches/lanterns

It is essential that you bring a good flashlight since our electricity only works at certain times of the day. We suggest at least a TWO D cell flashlight/lantern and a headlamp. (A good flashlight is NOT a mini Maglight or a small flashlight.)

What is the Weather like in Tambopata?

The Tambopata lowland rainforests lie far enough south of the equator to provide a cooler, drier winter season between May and October. General weather conditions are hot and humid. In Tambopata, the average maximum daytime temperature is between 78°F and 93°F (24°C and 31°C). The average overnight minimum temperature is between 66°F and 78°F (20°C and 24°C).

Cold months : May to September Cold fronts from Argentina can extend into the southwestern Amazon and drop daytime highs to 50°F (9°C) and nighttime lows to 43°F (5°C). Therefore, during that season you always have to be potentially prepared for cold and drizzle.

Rainy months : November to April Be prepared for heavy rain that can continue for hours or days. About 80% of the average annual rainfall of 3,000 mm occurs during this season.

How to take care of my health in Tambopata

There are some basic health issues that require care and attention. The following points are recommended guidelines only: Consult your doctor and check with your health department/travel clinic before leaving your home country, in case there have been changes to the health regulations of the country you are visiting.

Malaria is present but extremely rare. If you want to take medical precautions against malaria, consult your doctor or tropical medicine specialist.

What are the diets like on the Tambopata tour?

For those guests with specific dietary requirements, please ensure we are notified prior to arrival. We can accommodate most requests, but we need advance notice to do so.
